Autumn is coming. Bring on the mash & gravy.
[TIP: try a spoonful of our Wholegrain Cider & Horseradish Mustard stirred into the buttery mash. Or, Creamed Horseradish, particularly good with a beef casserole.]
There’s a definite moment in September when salad starts to feel less like lunch and more like a wilting garnish. The evenings draw in, the jumpers come out and suddenly what we really want is something bubbling, saucy and deeply comforting.
[TIP: a couple of good glugs of Real Tomato Ketchup in the bubbling casserole add a subtle depth to overall flavours.]
Luckily, autumn is rather good at delivering exactly that.
Eating seasonally isn’t just about following the calendar. It’s about making the most of food when it’s full of flavour, often more affordable, and perfectly suited to what our bodies crave.
[TIP: our Dijon Mustard stirred into the potatoes as you mash them creates a balanced taste experience when the Shepheard’s Pie is served.]
This is the season for vegetables with personality. It’s time for earthy root veg, sweet squash, plump mushrooms, hearty greens and all the colourful goodness that comes with eating food at its seasonal best.
And, while healthy eating might sound like a noble pursuit, we’re firmly of the opinion that it shouldn’t involve staring sadly at a steamed broccoli floret. Though bursting with vit. C, we can all do better than that.
Instead, think hearty casseroles, generous one-pots, golden pies and slow-cooked dishes packed with vegetables, pulses, grains and plenty of flavour.
Add a good dollop of your favourite Stokes Sauce and suddenly “eat your greens” sounds considerably more appealing.
In fact, Rick (Stokes MD and self-proclaimed chupaholic) often tells guests the story that, when his daughter was little, dipping vegetables in the glories of our now award-winning Real Tomato Ketchup was the only way she could be tempted to eat broccoli. It’s all about the sauce.
[TIP: This can be taken two ways … add Bloody Mary Ketchup and perhaps a little Chilli Jam to shift a beef and mushroom cass towards a bolognaise (add pasta); or with a creamy Dijon Mustard sauce with dollops of Tomato Ketchup for a rich Stroganoff.]
Autumn is also the perfect excuse to cook with tomorrow in mind. Make a big batch, portion it up, freeze a few servings and congratulate yourself later when dinner is sorted before you’ve even taken your coat off.
It’s good planning, good value and, most importantly, very good, prompt eating.
So, as we head into the cosiest season of the year, let’s embrace food that’s nourishing, seasonal and gloriously comforting. Because healthy eating doesn’t have to be worthy. It just needs to be delicious.
And preferably with saucy sensual sauce.
