The Bear Hunt

We’re going on a Bear Hunt. We’re not scared. Or are you? As summer gets closer, how good are you at keeping kids entertained in the car? This week we have some: Top tips for travel entertainment, Sandwiches, Snacks & More. Are we nearly there yet?

  BACK

Red lorry, Yellow lorry

Keeping the car entertained on a long journey is every driver’s nightmare, whatever the age of the occupants.

Batteries fail and music tastes clash – then the kids clash too.

Here’s a couple of traditional – old school – games that everyone can join in.

The Shopping Game

First player says, “I’m going to the supermarket to buy some …” then names something that starts with the letter A, like apples. The next person says, “I’m going to the grocery store to buy some apples and ...” then has to add something that starts with B, then C, then D and so on…

‘Z’ anybody ???Red lorry, Yellow lorry

There are many variations on this depending on the children’s ages. First to 10 is the winner – so keep your eyes peeled.

If they are a little older, try make / models of lorries – Mercedez, Volvo, DAF etc.

Car Story Time

A great way to include everybody, taking it in turns for the story to take its course. Start off creating a line from a story, then get the next person to come up with the next bit (which should link), then the next – etc.So, “one day I went to the park and I saw an ENORMOUS….” Ruby, your go. “…an ENORMOUS bottle of Stokes Tomato Ketchup…”.

OK, your go Mum “…the bottle spilled out 200g of Mediterranean tomatoes, even though it was a 100g bottle…”. Wow, how am I going to follow that, thought Rick. “…and a dozen Flamingos started dancing in the thick tomato pool…”.

The ‘2 Clue’ Game

Two clue-words together make one ‘compound word’. So, if the compound word is butterfly, you could say “the first word is something you spread on your toast … and the second word is a buzzy insect.”

No mum it’s not a “jam bee?” – what even is a jam bee??!!??Try watermelon, or…

Try words like treehouse, sunflower, carpark, carwash, headband, ice cream, hotdog, rainbow, skateboard … enjoy.

We’re going on a Bear Hunt…

For 35 years, readers have been swishy-swashying and splash-sploshing through the award-winning favourite picture book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Written by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury.

In this video, Michael Rosen performs the book – why not sing along in the car.

Smart Snacking

The English word picnic ultimately comes from the French pique-nique.

Although, we Brits really take it seriously, from a coffee and sandwich at the side of the road, to the full tartan rugs, wicker baskets, champagne, fine food and great friends.

Try something different with the sandwiches. Load them into a delicious meal then wrap then on greaseproof paper drawn and tied together with a piece of string.

But … just how long is the piece of string!!

Snacking en RouteRainbow Salads

Re-cycle the tasty way, with Chef’s fun favourites for picnic feasting – see the recipe HERE.

Back to that French word … it originally referred to a meal where everyone paid for, or contributed their share of the food, but later came to mean a meal eaten outdoors. The Picnic Sandwich

With a little clever thinking, you can create a full salad in a roll. Turn a ham salad into a masterpiece with Caper Mayonnaise, simply by chopping capers and mixing them with our Real Mayonnaise to taste.

Packed, wrapped and ready to go.It’s the simple twists and delicious condiments, sauces, chutneys and mayonnaise that make all the difference.

Let the imagination run wild, then give it a shake of Stokes.Fig & Goats Cheese Spring Roll.

These really are tasty, simple to make, and easy to carry alternatives to sausage rolls. Crunchy filo pastry around our Fig Relish and some oozingly good Goats Cheese.

You’ll find the recipeHERE.

More to come as the Summer rolls in.
